Overview of what you need to do:
  1. Verify that the thermostat is working before you add it to the Z-Wave network.
  2. Add the thermostat into the Z-Wave network
  3. Create a scene to allow you to control the thermostat from your phone
Step-by-step guide:

Step 1. Verify that the thermostat is working before you add it to the Z-Wave network

Before trying to use your thermostat's wireless capabilities, it's a good idea to test that its basic thermostat functions are working properly first.

Step 1.1. Go ahead and remove the old thermostat from your wall heater. Usually, you will need to unscrew two wires from the thermostat: one red, and one white.

At this point, a simple test to see if the Vera / ZTS-100 system will work with your furnace is: if you touch the red wire to the white wire, the furnace should switch on. Likewise, breaking the connection should switch the furnace off.

Step 1.2. Open up your ZTS-100, separate the front plate from the back plate, and install the four batteries in the battery compartment found on the front plate.

Step 1.3. Thread the red and white wire through the hole in the middle of the back plate and secure the back plate to your wall. You should be able to use the same screws and screw holes that you used for your old thermostat.

Step 1.4. Connect the red wire to W1, and the white wire to C. Take a look at the diagram below for guidance.

Step 1.6. Test to see if you can switch the heater ON. Press the "mode" key a few times to cycle through [the different modes until "HEAT" is shown on the display. You should hear two clicks and a small [1][2] text showing on the display. The furnace should switch on a few seconds shortly after.

The diagram below shows you what you'll see on the display as you cycle through the various modes.

Step 1.7. Test to see if you can switch the heater OFF. Press the "Mode" key a few times to cycle through the different modes until "OFF" is shown on the display. The furnace should switch off a few seconds after, and you'll see the small text [1][2] disappear from the display.

That's the end of Step 1! You're all set to active the wireless Z-Wave capabilities of your thermostat.
